Who We Are

Since July 2013, Mošito wa Mamelodi has been involved in a process of researching, collecting and documenting any historical event, individuals, area, Institution or whatever material deemed necessary relating to one of the oldest and largest townships in South Africa.

Mamelodi existed long before, dating back to 1400. The first people to be credited to have lived in Pretoria East are the Ndebele Tribe of the Amanala Clan. They had livestock and depended on farming. Then, came Voortrekkers in the 1800s.

Mamelodi, known as “Mangoloane” was named “Vlakfontein”. Locals subsequently gave it the name of “Vlaka”. The area took a serious shape in the late 1940’s when the then Pretoria City Council built the Rondavels as a new form of housing. This plan back-fired immensely when locals vehemently rejected the Rondavels Housing Scheme. That period saw the Municipality implement construction of the Four Room Houses, which were dubbed “Match Boxes”. With birds building their own nests, Blacks had no choice in the type of houses they were built.

The Forced Removals of the late 1940’s saw many people brought from townships like Riverside, Eersterust, Storom, Lady Selborne, Bantule, and other areas to Vlakfontein (Vlaka).

Vlakfontein would later be changed in 1962 to Mamelodi at the behest of the first Mayor of the township, Mr H.M Pitje.

Every day is spent researching and digging this illustrious, proud oral history which has, over the years, contributed immensely to the rich South African economic and politico-social tapestry.
